Pre-School and Kindergarten

Kintergarden Students

In our Pre-school and Kindergarten environment, we strive to create diverse, enriching learning opportunities for our community of young learners. There are multiple opportunities for children to experiment with and extend early literacy and numeracy skills, as well as to develop an appreciation and understanding of science, social studies, and the arts.

Our environment has been created to encourage the development of autonomy among children. Collaboration among children is encouraged and facilitated, as we see this as critical to the construction of knowledge. As children work with one another to solve problems, they will develop an appreciation of diversity and culture among themselves, which they will then be able to generalize to the community outside of our school.

Children will support and encourage one another leading to the development of strong relationships and the establishment of a community in which children feel comfortable and confident expressing themselves. Children will develop an enthusiasm and excitement for learning, which, will hopefully remain with them on their life-long educational journey. Kindergarten classes are open for all, Iranians and Non-Iranians alike.

Primary School (Grades 1 to 6)

Primary Students

The TIS offers a comprehensive academic program starting from kindergarten/pre-school and continuing all the way through high school. As elementary school is the first formal educational period for children, it has an important role in their life. At the beginning of this period they enter a new environment which is different from their family life.

Through their attempts, the children finally adapt to the new environment. Here they build friendships and gains self-confidence. But, more importantly, they need to improve their concentration and interest in learning. It is our duty at the TIS to create such a warm environment where your kids are encouraged and supported, academically as well as emotionally, throughout the school year.

Mathematics

Math is more than memorizing rules and procedures; it is a process through which students investigate and acquire knowledge of number sense and numeration, patterns and relationships, geometry and spatial sense, all for developing critical thinking skills.
TIS math instruction encourages children to investigate, discuss, question, and verify. A primary goal for the study of mathematics in the elementary is to give children experiences that promote their ability to solve the problems and to build mathematics from situations generated within the content of everyday experiences.
Students are also expected to make conjectures and conclusions and to discuss their reasoning in words, both written and spoken with, graphs and charts with manipulative. Throughout the elementary grades there are numerous and varied interrelated experiences that encourage each student to develop mathematical habits of mind.

Science

Learning science at TIS is something students do, not something done to them. As students progress through the elementary grades they are encouraged to think scientifically.
They will describe objects and events, ask questions, construct explanations and test them against current scientific knowledge, and effectively communicate their ideas to others. Throughout the science program students are helped to develop an understanding of what science is, what science is not, what science can and cannot do, and how science contributes to culture.

Social Studies

TIS students live in a complex, multicultural and rapidly ever changing world. The purpose of the elementary social studies is to assist young people in developing their abilities to make reasonable decisions to be good citizens in a society with various cultures. The social studies students are divided into different large themes. These themes act as the foundation upon which all instructions set.

High School (Grades 10 to 12)

High School Students

High school is a period in which the adolescent student must negotiate fundamental transformations in their development towards maturity and adulthood. As the recent discoveries in the field of psychiatry have shown, many psychological conditions and emotional disorders either begin to exist or surface during adolescence. (One such common type of disorder, especially in teenage girls, is the widely known but hardly treated ‘depression’.)

It is important for all of us to recognize that our children’s assumptions and beliefs are shaped by their own cultural backgrounds and values which, in turn, will definitely affect their developing adolescent identity. As such, high school students are qualitatively different from younger learners. Using the right instructional strategies to maximize the learning advantages and address the learning challenges of high school students can make all the difference in their success.

By the time they enter high school; most students have also entered the formal operational stage of cognitive development. That is, they can think abstractly and need fewer concrete examples to understand complex thought patterns. Generally speaking, therefore, the majority of students at this age share the following characteristics:

  • They need to understand the purpose and relevance of the educational activities they have to take part in;
  • They are very much motivated—even excited—both internally as well as externally;
  • Some may have self-imposed cognitive barriers due to possible academic failures in the past and certain lack of confidence;
  • They may experience temporary ‘shutdown states’ in certain cognitive areas and, as a result, need to learn how to know and overcome these difficulties; and,
  • They are eager to assume individual responsibility for their own learning and progress as they also seek to set personal goals both in the short and long run.

Also, most students have some interest in:

  • Group activities;
  • Leadership roles in planning their free time and a chiefly support role in their education;
  • Developing a community consciousness; and,
  • Opportunities for self-expression.

By incorporating the best in pedagogic methodology and educational technology and taking all the above-mentioned factors into account in the high school section of the TIS, we do our best to provide a well-rounded education based on the mastery of English in different subjects and a challenging educational program based on a strong university preparatory curriculum. In this way, we make sure we can give our high school graduates the vital skills in order to enter and succeed in higher education.

We offer a full high school program of studies designed to prepare students for college/university entrance. The high school program is based on the North American model. Students who successfully complete the graduation requirements will earn the SIS diploma.

The following subjects are taught in high school:

Art, Biology, Chemistry, Computer/IT, Economics, Ethics, General English, Literature, Mathematics, Persian, Physical Education, Physics, Second Language, (Natural) Science, and Social Science.
